Are You Like Meat Loaf?

I recently watched an episode of VH1′s Behind The Music featuring comeback king Meat Loaf.  I am not ashamed to admit I love his music.  It seems to me every song is an epic creation from start to finish.  The partnership he has with Jim Steinman is nothing short of genius.

How does this apply to small business?  Meat was really struggling with his career and was on a crash course for early retirement when he began seeing a psychologist about his issues.  In short, he discovered the problem was confidence.  He was asked the question, “Do you feel like a star?’  His answer was always, “No!”  According to the psychologist, that was the problem.  He would never be able to be a star until he believed he was a star.  Finally, after several visits, he was able to answer the question with a “Yes!”  From that moment on his career was looking up.

Have you ever asked yourself a similar question?  “Are you a success?” or “Are you going to be successful?”  This may seem silly, but I believe being able to answer this question is key to your individual success.  If you are not sure of your answer or you don’t feel confident, you may want to address the issue and look inside for the answer.

Here are a few things that may help with “feeling” like a success:

  • Ask yourself why you are doing what you are doing.  What is your motivation?
  • What will life be like if you didn’t succeed?  Can you afford to take that chance?
  • Are you committed to do what it takes to be successful?

Finally, and most importantly:

  • How do YOU define success?  This will make the most impact on your success.  If you don’t know what you are aiming at, you will never hit it.
